MOANA CHIMES slack key style || Mark Nelson

Here's a little slack key ukulele that I surfed across. Mark Nelson posted the arrangement on Alistair Wood's Ukulele Hunt...

MOVIES || Japanese Sandman || Debra Paget

This YT video mixes snapshots with Beachboys music and segments of the movie. There's an extended ukulele scene. Suekulele said in her comment on the the Ukulele Movies post, "A beautiful scene of Debra Paget and Hoagy Carmichael doing "Japanese Sandman". He appears to play a soprano uke while she dances and sings.".

Ms Paget was quite a dancer. I came across this video of a Fritz Lang's INDIAN EPIC a German Film. This clip is quite intense and will likely only appeal to those with higher levels of testosterone and exotic dancers. Sorry there's no ukulele in this clip.
.

Uke, Ubu, Uke found another great NPR video...

It is of a group of musicians known as, Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeroes. See the inspirational NPR video on http://ukeubuuke.blogspot.com/ They also appeared on the David Letterman Show that I never watch because that's some of my prime ukulele playing and reading time. Thanks Marcus.

.
The trumpeter also plays a baritone ukulele on portions of some songs. This group reminds me of the many band collaborations that occurs at the Ukulele Club of Santa Cruz -- As I usually say, it's a celebration of the ukulele, but it is really a celebration of music and therefore life. The eye contact and interaction between the singers and musicians is joyful.

HEIN OVERBEEK || The Sequel

I like Hein Overbeek's playing and humble style, so I wanted to do a sequel of his ukulele playing virtuosity. It appears that Hein is a simple man. Red sofa before a painted white brick wall. Solid brown pants and a solid green shirt. It is as if Hein were a tree with a little sappling in his hands in the shape of a ukulele. The sappling is well taken care of and sings out beautifully. Thanks Hein - hope you don't mind my silly analogy. Play on!

.
The humble and simple ukulele is in good hands. The Netherlands seems to be another ukulele oasis. HU

UKULELE SODOKU || www.ukulelehunt.com

French Polynesia
...
If you want a regular dose of tablature to tease your fingers with (and practice counting out notes in measures, like me) then I recommend being on Alistair Wood's e-mail list. He regularly posts rock guitar riff's as part of his daily posting repetoire. Since I mix in a dash of work betwixt my ukulele playing I think of it as work for the brain - a bit of Ukulele Sodoku!
.
http://ukulelehunt.com/2009/10/27/rage-against-the-machine-riff-tab/
.
Remember, I am just a humble uker and I can't blast thru these songs as quickly as Al does, But some of the melodies are quite interesting even if slowed down. Al is a first class, top shelf blogger/musician and puts an mp3 of each song with the post. As I write this, I think of course y'all know Ukulele Hunt by now -- but perhaps there's one person still out there.
.
As a kid I was a philatelist, oh no! - and still love those miniature masterpieces! HU

HEIN OVERBEEK || Simply Ukulele from the Netherlands

Hein Overbeek plays ukulele accompanied by a vintage Jelly Roll Morton tune. Hein has quite a a collection of vintage tunes he plays in that beautiful old-time ukulele style on a sweet Martin ukulele. I think I see a traditonal Swedish "tomte gubbe" standing in the foreground. Click on the title above to link directly to the Hein's YouTube page for more songs of this era...

GETTING TOGETHER WITH FRIENDS

-+*+^+*+-
.^.
.
Today, I had the opportunity to get together with some friends for a little time playing some of the Jazzy Ukulele Arrangements by Glen Rose. -- Mr. Kim J. has really taken to Glen's workbooks and he was eager to get together with Chris, Byron and myself to play some and discuss the simplicity of major and minor chord progressions from the workbooks.
.
We played some old jazz standards: L-O-V-E, Autumn Leaves, Fly Me to the Moon, I Left my Heart in San Francisco. The four of us are all intermediate players and the arrangements went fairly smoothly as we worked thru some of the quicker chord changes like you normally do whenever you work on a new song.
.
I like to get together in small groups. But there's something that I really long for is more arrangements for ukulele duets, trios, or quartets. Or perhaps not the arrangements but the ability to play a complementary part by varying the strum, the chord, or by some light ornamental picking. (I worked on these a bit in Rhan Wilson's Uke U but it seems that I can never get enough playtime.)
.
Chris has a way of playing the chords but also picking a string and getting a softer one-note sound mixed in between his chording. He gets a very melancholy feel that comes from hours of experimenting. Byron is a fan and creator of some chord melodies and he also "feels" how to pick these melody notes quite adeptly.
.
I often noodle on my uke and have a few pages in my day-timer with chord boxes so that I can write them down. I like to keep a record of some of my doodles for a future creation very much like Judy's moleskin concept at the Ukulele Perspective blog.
.
Near the end of our playing, Kim had 3 teacher colleagues of his coming by to sing the standards we were working on earlier. So the 7 of us had some time to play and sing together. What a great way to spend a Sunday afternoon.

TERRY C. Shares UKE IKE on BIKE

Many of you have read Terry C. from Australia's articles on his eBay Martin ukulele quest. He and I met on eBay as competitors for ukulele player photos. Then I e-mailed him and suggested we share photos instead of bidding each other into oblivion, having originals is nice - but it can get too expensive. We have been in contact for I would guess 3 years now sharing photos and receiving pictures of Terry's vacations with his wife and his trusty ukulele.
.
Terry has posted some great videos with ukulele players 'slide shows' with ukulele player musicians, primarily his favorite Cliff Edwards (also known as Ukulele Ike). Here's a link to Terry's BEARETUBE youtube page...

YIKES, MORE UKES, EH? (Jean E.)

Hi Uke Fans,

Yikes or yippee ukes are everywhere!

Have you noticed the new (I think) TV ad for Subaru Outback with ukulele music and female vocalist?? Well I just tracked it down! Basia Bulat is a Canadian singer and the song is Before I Knew".

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=01HuLocFFNA&feature=related
http://www.basiabulat.com/news.htm

Tonite the Subaru ad was immediately followed by an ad for cookies which was accompanied by - you guessed it - ukulele music (no vocals).

We also watch a Japanese program "Out and About" which uses a very short Hawaiian animation and uke music as one of its between segment separators. Tuesdays around 6:30am on 60-2, second part of NHK World hour.

Last Wed at Berkeley Uke Club Susan led us in the song "Sway". So what did we hear tonite? A re-mix of Dean Martin singing Sway for Chrysler commercial. Yeah, I know, no ukulele in the ad but still a connection to BUC...

GLEN ROSE UKULELE JAZZ VIDEOS

Glen Rose has passed thru our California ukulele clubs leaving a wake of enthusiasm for jazz ukulele sounds. Kim J., from the Berkeley Ukulele Club is an educator in Contra Costa county and he's taking on an additional role as educator of Glen Rose's Jazzy Ukulele style.

I really enjoy Glen's enthusiasm for the history of music and his storytellin' while performing on stage with piano, guitar, ukulele and tap shoes. Glen has many YouTube videos posted of his performance and his recent jazzy ukulele technigues. He plays jazz on a uke tuned with a LOW G string to give it a full jazzy feel. Glen's tautological style is very clear and straightforward. Enjoy it!

1920's HISTORICAL

--%^%--

Here's a YT video (below) that's a lot like an old silent movie. It talks about the 1920's as an era of prosperity, prohibition and fashion. It also has a great soundtrack. I always wondered where the term "flappers" came from and now I know thanks to this production by Sandra. Music by Duke Ellington and the Dixieland Jazz Band.

A Lady Who Brings the Vintage Ukulele Era Naughtiness to Song...

I have been posting a few pieces of artwork lately. In the art we find the beloved -- music, ukulele and fun. This art is a Disney-esque portrait of Janet Klein in repose with her ukulele and Bambi's forest of friends. Janet's albums all have that vintage era energy and the teasingly naughty side of the 1920's musical era.

VINCE TUZZI || SANTA CRUZ ICON

Vince Tuzzi is a soft spoken member of the Ukulele Club of Santa Cruz who has a warm heart and great voice. I first heard him sing Willie Nelson songs when he played with various opening bands for the UCSC meetings at Bocci's Cellar. I have heard him sing John Prine's In Spite of Ourselves with Celina Gutierrez earlier this year -- I was thrilled since I enjoyed the original "naughty" duet with JP and Iris DeMent and posted it here...

Jay Holiday Travels Route 66

Just a few of the photos of my kayaking and Uklectic buddy, Jay Holiday, with his Ovation Guitar. Makes this ukulele player jealous of all of the wonderful places he's seen on his journey from Chicago to L.A. via Route 66. Jay has a reporter buddy that takes him along on long journeys to take care of the necessities along the way. More to come...
Hey buddy, where's the U-K-E!

The BELOVED GEORGE FORMBY

--: Formby :--
.
George Formby Jr. (1904-1961) partial Wiki
.
Formby endeared himself to his audiences with his cheeky Lancashire humour and folksy North of England persona. In film and on stage, he generally adopted the character of an honest, good-hearted but accident-prone innocent who used the phrases: "It's turned out nice again!" as an opening line; "Ooh, mother!" when escaping from trouble; and a timid "Never touched me!" after losing a fistfight.
.
What made him stand out, however, was his unique and often mimicked musical style. He sang comic songs, full of double entendre, to his own accompaniment on the banjolele, for which he developed a catchy musical syncopated style that became his trademark.

IS YOU IS OR IS YOU AIN'T MA' BABY?

Do Your Ukulele Chord Homework!
Aunt Phoebe and Myrtle sez so!
===
.
I am a bit of a chord junkie. I think my Berkeley Ukulele Club guru Steven Strauss has spoiled me with a plethora of unique chords. Here, I have a fertile test ground for my and YOUR chord knowledge, it is a site called MIDNIGHT SUN. Peter in the UK has many challenging arrangements for an intermediate (ukulele) player and they are put in BOX FORM and the LYRICS are separate. There are also midi's for all the songs. As you will quickly surmise the songs are a bit more complex than the 3-chord variety and the songs are jazz tunes.
.
http://www.midnitesun.co.uk/otherhtm/framset1.htm

.
I can't get you directly to the tune "Is You Is or Is You Ain't Ma' Baby" due to the way the site is created. Go to the "I's" find the song and check out the chords, lyrics, and midis for yourself. And Kim J., I know you're reading this - have fun with this and see how well it coordinates with Glen Rose's jazzyukulele books. There are many songs to sort thru and test your chord knowledge. Have fun stimulating those brain cells. HU

UKULELE HEADSTOCK DOODLE

Here's a sketch I made of a ukulele head stock. I work as a draftsman but drafting now is so much more about sitting at a computer screen and making exact layouts. That good feeling of the pencil in the hand doesn't get to happen so much any more. My sketches are always part drafting part comic doodle.
.
The symbol in the headstock is similar to the one that I requested from Mike DaSilva on my custom uke. You see, I also studied mathematics at CSUH which is now called California State University of the East Bay. I wanted to create a simple symbol that combined mathematics and drafting - so that's what I wanted to express.

There's an area of mathematics called Fractals that I never studied. I like to think of my triangular symbol as the beginning of a musical Mendelbrot fractal. Perhaps it is just a humble pictorial beginning but the my music keeps expanding in friendships, playing skills, singing skills, and confidence as I creep slowly towards my 10,000 hours of deliberate practice. HU

Here's some famous Mendelbrot fractal images for the inquiring minds....

WORLDLY THOUGHTS || Blue People || Good Old Days

Back in February 2009, I posted about my reading, "The Happy Minimalist." Unfortunately, I have little used the any of the ideas contained within book. Perhaps, I have increased in my guilt or awareness of the burden from my many possessions. I have paired down my ukuleles to an essential few. I actually have my ukulele between me and the keyboard now. I was enjoying playing tab of Killing Me Softly (Crazy Dawg) and The Cape by Eric Bibb (Chordie). Then I stopped to look at some of my links and checked out some of the Organizer Claire's Clutter Coach Blog. She has many great topics and gives them all considerable thought and attention. I cut and pasted a portion here.
"Try as you will, you get behind in the race, in spite of yourself. It's an incessant strain to keep pace… And still you lose ground. Science empties its discoveries on you so fast that you stagger beneath them in hopeless bewilderment… Everything is high pressure. Human nature can't endure much more."

--Atlantic Journal on June 16, 1833.
.
I have a stamp collection in a box. In it I have a letter dated 1899 or so from a school teacher daughter in Minnesota writing home to her mother in San Jose, California. She writes of the children in her school and cholera. She also talked about the falsehood of the "good ole days." Even Junior Brown has in his song, My Wife Thinks You're Dead, "Thinks are really different now since the good old days." Each era has it's struggles and luxuries. Still all of the human issues remain.
.
I met a woman, named Nanette, at the Lodi, CA October Street Faire (First Sunday in October. 2 streets, 6 blocks long) She had made many paintings of African American jazz and other music greats, as well as Carlos Santana, Willie Nelson, and Brother IZ.
.
She painted each face blue in a manner that accentuated the sameness of us humans. She has a wonderful story of her reasons why she does so. Today I sent Nanette information on a ukulele favorite: Cliff Edwards. I sent some of my favorite YT videos and the Red Hot Jazz link with so many of his songs. I am hoping she may find inspiration to do some more ukulele appreciation artwork.

Good thing that we all have something as simple as the humble ukulele to share our joy, release our tensions, and socialize with good people. Today is a good ole day!

RED LIPS KISS MY BLUES AWAY || Lyric Variations

RED LIPS KISS MY BLUES AWAY 1927
---
for chords go to this link
---

I have obtained a the original sheet music but unfortunately it doesn't match either of the YT videos attached below. That's quite frustrating since I've had so many hits and requests for the chords to this song on the blog and thought I had this one settled. But it appears that there are several versions. The top video has changed the lyrics and created a male/female duet and the bottom video just uses a portion of the song.
...
Dear, I have that most peculiar feeling
Why tell me what makes you feel that way?
There's a certain something that goes stealing
Let me know what am I supposed to say
----
Red lips Uh-huh Kiss my blues away
Red lips they won't kiss today
Just pucker your lips and press them close to mine
But deary pressing lips is not my line
Red lips Uh-huh Kiss me I emplore
Yes dear I'll obey
----
Come make a dozen trips
I'll let my red ruby lips
Kiss my blues away
("smootch-smootch") Was that good honey?
I'll say that it was. Now that you've given me a sample.
Well honey, say goodbye, and hurry on your way.
Do you think a kiss or two is ample?
How much more do you expect today?
----
Red lips kiss my blues away
Red lips kiss the night to day
Any old time that you come cudd'ling near
Isn't it strange the way the blues disappear
----
Red lips hold them close to mine
Sweetheart don't delay
Come make a dozen trips
Let your red ruby lips
Kiss my blues away
----
MUSICAL INTERLUDE
----
(Both)
Red lips hold them close to mine
Sweetheart don't delay
Come make a dozen trips
Let your red ruby lips
Kiss my blues away
----
Red Lips... Got-cha...
====
.^.
(Blue=male part, Pink=female part, Orange=duet part)

Here's another variation. This YT video has some historical info.
.^.
Now red lips kiss my dog-gone blues away
Red lips kiss the night to day
Any time that you come cudd'ling near
Now isn't it strange the way the blues disappear
...
Oh, those red lips hold them close to mine
Sweetheart don't delay
Come make a dozen trips
Let your red ruby lips kiss my blues away

FINGER TEASER || RHAN WILSON = YODA

Always two there are, no more, no less: a master and an apprentice.- Yoda

Help you I can, yes.- Yoda

=====================================================

Unfortunately, I've missed a few Tuesday night Uklectics garage jams recently. My work schedule has been quite harried and Wendy has had booths at the Fog Fest in Pacifica last weekend and this Sunday in Lodi, CA. I finally got a chance to see my Yoda-music-guru Rhan Wilson famous for his Altared Christmas Show and his Uke U training.

We talked about several things and I wanted to record one exercise he showed me for future reference. Right now it is just a finger exercise. I created a diagram on my AutoCAD which is easier to read if you click to enlarge the jpg. This is a closed pattern that can be moved up and down the fretboard.

There are 8 notes. The idea is to play then in groups of 4 and to move up one step and play 4 more, etc. After that reverse it.

1--2--3--4--5--6--7--8 ___ 8--7--6--5--4--3--2--1

D--C--A--G--E--D--C--A ___ A--C--D--E--G--A--C--D

Try fingering... 1-2-3-4, 2-3-4-5, 3-4-5-6, 4-5-6-7, 5-6-7-8

And then... 8-7-6-5, 7-6-5-4, 6-5-4-3, 5-4-3-2, 4-3-2-1

BURNING UKE VII VIDEO SURFACES

The ukulele tribes have gathered around the firepit for the ceremonial ukulele sacrifice. Peter and Donna Thomas, Andy and Pam Andrews, Sandor (Shawn-Door), Jayme Kelly Curtis and Jay Holiday are up and about the fire closeup. Hundreds of ukulele players were gathered in the flesh or in spirit to celebrate. The camera pans across the darkness for those lurking ukulele strummers. Then the sacred words are spoken, "Oh when the sun beats down and..."

(Accordians? Yeah! Them 2. I mean 2 of them.)
