Janet, a uke player that goes to the Berkeley Ukulele Club and just became a follower of Humble Uker, asked me why I have a page for Glen Rose. Well the reason is that Glen is an extremely talented jazz musician that has attempted to make jazz music more understandable and accessible to the average ukulele player. Glen's is a teacher and his instruction books are well thought out, easy to follow and inexpensive.

Glen Rose & Kim Jorgensen

Glen Rose has been in the Northern California / Bay Area again. This time with a new instructional book for playing Jazz Blues that he's using in some recent classes. I just went to Glen's class prior to the August 2010 Ukulele Club of Santa Cruz meeting.

He is a man that is primarily a fantastic Jazz pianist that has expanded his performances to playing guitar and ukulele as well. Glen is an advocate of playing the ukulele with a low 4th string. (I have both high and low G concert ukuleles.) Glen is a rare individual that can put his knowledge in a concise, low-technical manner which means his tutorials and books get you going quickly.

Glen's work focuses on Jazz and how to get jazzier sounding music out of your ukulele. The Jazz Blues book is relatively thin, 25 pages according to my count. But the book starts with understanding what makes jazz and what blues are in a very tidy several paragraphs. If you haven't played many 9th's or 13th's type chords -- you're in for a surprise at their ease of play and great sound. Glen works with barred chords which every teacher discusses but few students explore -- this book gives very comfortable barred chords to work with.

You may feel a bit out of sorts to begin, but by the end of the book you'll be playing Jazzy Blues totally in 9th's & 13th's with slides, walkdowns and turnarounds. I have each of Glen's books from classes that I've attended. If your interested in trying Jazz or Jazz Blues, Glen creates great introductory books at reasonable prices.

The Jazzy Uke Man GLEN ROSE is coming to SF Bay

I have been meaning to post this for quite some time. Glen Rose is an amazing Jazz Pianist and Historian. He also performs with guitar and now has brought his talents and insights together to share beautiful ukulele music too. This video of an all time classic is an example of what Glen has to offer.

He plays here on a MODIFIED baritone, it is soprano tuned G-C-E-A and has a low G. Glen is trying to get a broader range of notes. I am glad he's doing this work in standard soprano tuning because that is the most prevalent tuning. I have two main players that are both concert sized instruments, one is standard high-G and the other is low-G. I think every one should have atleast one of each!

Glen Rose has been travelling in the East, really east, like Cambodia. I asked him to share some photos, tell about his travels and his new ukulele books that he’s working on while travelling.

I was in Phnom Penh hunkered down with my graphic artists turning out the new book and re-doing the other in the computer. It looks a lot better already. I think I will have a lot of finished pages in about 5 days or so. I wonder if there's any chance I might send you some for a proof read on the chord diagrams.

I'll get a photo tomorrow and send it too you. It's hot as hell here and so much dust I usually wear a mask outside in the city when I'm on the back of a motorbike taxi. I have my Bari and my Soprano with me. Keeps me sane under my mesquito net playing myself to sleep most nights. I’m jamming with a jazz guitar player pal of mine here too. I’ll probably pick up a couple of standards jazz gigs here at familiar haunts. They're used to my guitar - I wonder what they'll think of the ukes?!

This computer is soooo slow I can only send these 2 photos now. I think I have the only ukulele in all of Cambodia and for sure the only one playing jazz tunes on one. It fits in my hammock better than the big old guitar used to.

This sleepy spot in Cambodia is on the seaside , called Kep. It's really the most, or should I say, the only beautiful environment in this country. A real throw back in time. A great respite from the big dusty city of Phnom Penh.

It looks quite beautiful. What's with all of that tape on the Baritone? Why are you there is southeast Asia? Tell me about your new book project.

Good eyes - The tape is there to mark all of the notes so I can learn all the notes on the fretboard and for instant recognition of what jazz chord I'm am looking for or want to build from any point on the neck. Just like a piano where I can see all the notes, now I can see them all on the uke and make jazz chords from anywhere. It is extremely helpful for a musically erudite nut like myself.

My mission here is to get the my books all put into graphics programs (while retaining my music calligraphy) so they will look nicer. Also will get the new Bosa book put together soon, it's underway. It's hot here, and dusty. Hard to get things done in this tropical, inland heat.

GETTING TOGETHER WITH FRIENDS

Today, I had the opportunity to get together with some friends for a little time playing some of the Jazzy Ukulele Arrangements by Glen Rose. -- Mr. Kim J. has really taken to Glen's workbooks and he was eager to get together with Chris, Byron and myself to play some and discuss the simplicity of major and minor chord progressions from the workbooks.

We played some old jazz standards: L-O-V-E, Autumn Leaves, Fly Me to the Moon, I Left my Heart in San Francisco. The four of us are all intermediate players and the arrangements went fairly smoothly as we worked thru some of the quicker chord changes like you normally do whenever you work on a new song.

.

I like to get together in small groups. But there's something that I really long for is more arrangements for ukulele duets, trios, or quartets. Or perhaps not the arrangements but the ability to play a complementary part by varying the strum, the chord, or by some light ornamental picking. (I worked on these a bit in Rhan Wilson's Uke U but it seems that I can never get enough playtime.)

Chris has a way of playing the chords but also picking a string and getting a softer one-note sound mixed in between his chording. He gets a very melancholy feel that comes from hours of experimenting. Byron is a fan and creator of some chord melodies and he also "feels" how to pick these melody notes quite adeptly.

I often noodle on my uke and have a few pages in my day-timer with chord boxes so that I can write them down. I like to keep a record of some of my doodles for a future creation very much like Judy's moleskin concept at the Ukulele Perspective blog.

Near the end of our playing, Kim had 3 teacher colleagues of his coming by to sing the standards we were working on earlier. So the 7 of us had some time to play and sing together. What a great way to spend a Sunday afternoon.

Glen Rose has passed thru our California ukulele clubs leaving a wake of enthusiasm for jazz ukulele sounds. Kim J., from the Berkeley Ukulele Club is an educator in Contra Costa county and he's taking on an additional role as educator of Glen Rose's Jazzy Ukulele style.

I really enjoy Glen's enthusiasm for the history of music and his storytellin' while performing on stage with piano, guitar, ukulele and tap shoes. Glen has many YouTube videos posted of his performance and his recent jazzy ukulele technigues. He plays jazz on a uke tuned with a LOW G string to give it a full jazzy feel. Glen's tautological style is very clear and straightforward. Enjoy it! HU

I did have the benefit of taking a class from Glen at the Ukulele Club of Santa Cruz pre-meeting workshop but I think any intermediate player that seriously wants to play jazz songs can study his download and start to puy something together. One of my scandinavian friends from the Berkeley Ukulele Club, Mr. Kim J., is totally hooked on this method and is memorizing every song.

GLEN ROSE is an amazing performer, if you've been reading for a while you will know that I took a brief class before a Ukulele Club of Santa Cruz meeting and then saw him perform up in Roseville with my mother Solveig. (Sool-vay in Swedish, Sol-vay here.) He has been staying in the Santa Cruz area for a couple of months and a couple of weeks ago I saw him at Rhan's house/garden/music party. I had to leave before the real fun began but I heard that night was a musical dream. Glen is a jazz master on the piano. There was music until 2:30am the next morning!

Glen is doing some jazz arrangements for the ukulele. He asked me to review it and tell you what I thought. I just received his booklet of 10 CLASSIC JAZZ STANDARDS for UKULELE. It follows along in the same manner that his book for his classes do, very clear, and lightly color coded in 2- or 3-chord jazz patterns. He sells his book for $12 + $2 for shipping and I'll post a link on how to get ahold of him if you're inclined.

Glen is truly a MASTER of music and he's putting together beautiful arrangements with chords that will expand 90% of the ukulele players chord repetoires. Yes, they are frequently uncommon but jazzy 9ths and 13ths and MAJ7ths and m7b5ths which sound so incredibly distant to many beginners but are NOT difficult for an intermediate player. I know I write and post a lot but don't assume that I'm am anything but a very humble Humble Uker rambling words along.

This booklet is an excellent way to begin playing Jazzier tunes. I have found that there is a sweetness to Glen's arrangements. By this I mean, the chords have a very nice flow and the finger movements become very natural as their patterns repeat. I see inside the front cover that Glen also offers a Classic Bossa Nova Standards - for ukulele booklet, and I need to get it too since I am a sucker for Brazilian tunes. My brother Steven Lindroos' wife, Luciana, is from Goiania, Brazil, near the capitol, Brazilia. And I've studied a bit of Brazilian Portuguese.

As I typed this, it reminded me of http://www.jazzukes.com/, and Mark Occionero. I have a link to his page in the Ukulinkies. Marko has very genorously posted several chord-melody jazz standards there. Mark's arrangements are quite eloquent also. Glen's are NOT chord melodies which perhaps makes his work a bit more attainable for the newer intermediate player since the chord changes are not with every strum. I love to play Marko's chord melody arrangements, but I cannot play them up to speed -- my brain and fingers don't seem ready to communicate that fast yet. I go through phases where I work on them and move on and then come back - each time perhaps getting a bit better as it sinks in to my unconscienceness and oozes out.

In the Berkeley Ukulele Club we have a musical genious, Steven Strauss, he writes great song arrangements too. I love his masterful way of getting so much and doing it as effortlessly as possible. My Mom and the Glen Rose Connection

After Glen gave his Irving Berlin performance and Jazz Ukulele Class in Santa Cruz we've had a few e-mail conversations pertaining to his jazz chord ideas on the ukulele. I bought his Irving Berlin disk from him in SC and enjoyed the nostalgia and knowledge. He told me about three other shows he was giving. One happened to be in Sun City Roseville which is just a few exits from Sun City Lincoln Hills were my mother has lived for 7 years. (Both are humongous Dell Webb over-55-communities for retiring adults.)

I thought it would be great to visit my mom, Solveig Lindroos, take her to dinner, a fun show, and a MickeyDees softee ice cream afterwards on a 100 degree day near Sacramento, CA. Glen is a fantastic jazz pianist, historian, and he also incorporates a guitar, ukulele, and tap shoes into the act. He also dons different hats to set the mood for different Genre's. The theme for this night was Hit Parade Songs of 1956 (which is the year my mother moved from Northern Sweden to Tacoma, Washington). Since I was born in 1961 I didn't know all of the songs but the crowd of about 150-200 were singing along to many tunes with very little encouragement.

After the show and a line of people talking to Glen we spoke for a while, I introduced him to my mom from Sweden and walked to the parking lot to see a jazz music book that he had written. He told us that he had lived in Sundsvall, Sweden for two years and spoke a little Swedish too.

I spent the evening hanging out with my mom. Spent the night, slept like a rock except for her solid-black one-year-old cat missy (the cat is an Ikeeleeku = phoenetic spelling for a Finnish word meaning something that never stops moving) walking around my pillow sometime in the middle of the night.

In the morning we were perusing TouTube videos of Swedish singers. Then Susan Boyle's first video from Britian's got talent and then a 10-year-old girl from Sweden that can really B-E-L-T out a tune, named Zara Larsson, on Sweden's Got Talent...

As I hear this little one sing I wonder if singing so strong at such a young age is anything like a little leaguer throwing curveballs? Can you hurt a voice? What a confident young girl!

TONIGHT WAS THE TESTOSTERONE HE-MAN SONG NIGHT UNTIL THE CROWD OF HOT ANGRY WOMEN ARRIVED...

Andy and Sandor got on stage to announce the topic for this month's songs. A theme of testosterone, manliness and some grunting was occuring. But then an angry mob of women burst on to the stage. Soon Andy was gagged tied and bound in a chair before them. And the women made their demands! A small Santa Cruzian demand for rights!!!

Celina was the angry spokeswoman talking about women her age and how HOT they were. They were so HOT... so we started off with an intensely feverish Fever by Peggy Lee. Followed by It's my Party (Leslie Gore 1963), You Don't Own Me (Leslie Gore), My guy (Mary Wells 1964), The Loco-Motion (Little Eva), and I Will Survive (Gloria Gaynor 1979)

Somewhere in the Middle of all of the bondage and chaos Andy and Sandor slipped away and their alter egos came back dressed in drag. Andy was looking a bit like a drunk Carol Channing (white wig and thick white makeup sloppily circling his eyes, a bold dress, zipped quite low) and he had a very large saxophone that she/he wailed into with the song. Sandor had the overly rouged cheeks of a Raggedy Ann doll. The bass player Gary Cunningham, a big man from Vince Tuzzi's band earlier in the evening, was on stage in drag from the beginning dressed up in the finest and boldest dress that could be found in one of Santa Cruz's many fine used clothing stores. He enjoyed showing off his legs, which were of the finest furry lumberjack quality...

Oh yes, and as we were laughing thru the entire evening, we were strumming our ukes and singing at full throttle. And we were just 3/4's of the way thru with the evening's events. Such is life in SC.

GARY ROSE JAZZ UKULELE

Then Gary Rose appeared on Stage from the Dressing Room. He was dressed formally and exquisitely in a vintage black tuxedo. The club had settled and was now listening to a little history about Irving Berlin. A man that lived to 101 years old and Glen told us that he was the MOST prolific music writer ever.

He sang Putting on the Ritz and other similar vintage tunes and pointed out some of the transitions that we had been tutored on earlier in the day.

Glen holds his uke as though dancing at a formal dance tucking the uke in the crook of his elbow out towards the audience. He has quite a stage presence, history of song and writer, old-time vaudeville vocal skills and impeccable timing. I don't know how long he's been uking but I think we're going to see a lot more of him in the future.
