Doogey Makes a Simple Pitch: Ukulele Hunt Tees

Hey, I like the ukulele aspect of the this advertisement. Besides, Alistair Wood's Ukulele Hunt, being the most prolific daily ukulele on-line magazine, it is just a really solid place to go for information. So Doogey is Todd Baio. I do love the simple rhythm which he executes so sweetly.

TABLATURE CHALLENGE

Think of it as SODUKO for your ukulele fingers. So you haven't tried tablature? I have found two songs that will be more familiar to the over 40 reader. Crazy Dawg has posted some very generic looking tablatures and I have chosen two of the simplest and that I found sweet sounding. You'll have to have the melody in your head first. I hope you take the challenge and enjoy these two. Crazy Dawg's TAB's are in the UKULINKIES at the right.

KILLING ME SOFTLY (KMS)
http://home.arcor.de/crazydawg/ukulele/killing_me_softly.txt

AUTUMN LEAVES (Check out the video on the Crazy Dog link)
http://home.arcor.de/crazydawg/ukulele/autumn_leaves.txt

Compare this simple version of KMS to Ledward Ka'apana's a couple of posts ago. I find it amazing that I came across this song again so quickly. I remember being about 10 years old listening to an old white boxy plastic zenith radio and it was raining outside my window. I was cleaning my Lincoln pennies for my collection. At 10, this song was KILLING me, softly. (ca. 1971)

e-mail COMMENT 7-30-09: Good starting place, says my buddy, Larry Martin "but, I think it would help if the names of the chords were written on the sheet. For many I think the words would also be a big help, as you said it would be a good place to start but, it would take some changes to make this a good teaching tool. I also went through several other songs (on Crazy Dawg), and was impressed."

I wanted to keep the beginner's eye's limited in distractions to start - but Larry, as always, is Right.

LEDWARD KA'APANA

In Sunday's Bob Brozman class he spoke a few times about Ledward so I am placing these videos here for further review. His strumming is very much like what I have seen Hiram Bell do. The last video of Bob Brozman and Ledward has some hand details of some very sweet 2-string melodies. Our local good friend, Steven Strauss also uses these melodies in an entirely different way to create a soft subtle ukulele sound. Be sure to watch the last video carefully. Bob recommend that I record myself strumming a 5-minute loop of C, F, G7 and them playing around with the two string melodies and play and listen carefully. He said that humans have a great sense of when something sounds correct, "trust your ears", says Bob. Steven Strauss led me to that trough a couple of years ago - perhaps I'm ready now.

JOHN PROWN | Ukulele Land

John sent me some links to his YouTube page (click title above) as he has just posted some new ukulele posts. As you see above he was part of the Bosko & Honey U.S.A. Ukulele Safari.

I have had the Vince Guaraldi Charlie Brown's Christmas Album in my collection for many years. John creates a medley of these tunes.
http://www.ukeland.com/users/jon/files/guaraldi/Guaraldi%20Medley.mp3

John's version of the Eagle's Desperado shows off some really awesome skills, this is really some of the best ukulele improvisation that I've heard... http://www.ukeland.com/users/jon/files/desp/Desperado.mp3

There are several more fine compositions on... http://www.ukeland.com/pages/media/audio/users.cgi?jon

And there are several other people that have posted there music on this page... (Aldrine Guerrero, Ken Middleton, Bengt Nordfors (Swedish), Wilfred Welti (Classical), WS64, Ukulele Bartt, Dominator, and about 65 others. http://www.ukeland.com/pages/media/audio/

As I dig further, I see a person that I've met on a few occassions: music store, ukulele festival, and Bob Brozman's recent ukulele class. His name is John Kleinjans. I have heard his creations of Beatles songs and been impressed with his skills. Here he has posted "Maybe I'm Amazed", "Here's Comes the Sun", Here There and Everywhere"

Drop Bay Drop - Rare Blues, Novelty and Old Time Music for Ukulele
Lil Rev. (his purchase info is at the bottom of this post)

Just got a copy of Lil' Rev's new CD. He's got that good old hill country "barefoot" picking style
mixed with beautiful strumming skills. The Rev. shows a bit of the mischievious side in this CD. He has always been one of my favorite performers, storytellers and teachers. His use and skills on the ukulele are a joy to watch and listen to.
][
I heard his song, Boodle Am Shake, and liked the picking flavor. I googled for the chords and the master of all ukulele websites, Alistair Wood, surprised me by already having a posting of the song along with the finger picking licks and solid chords up the neck...

A Uke Player's Tropical Paradise: Jenna's Garden

---
My travels to Santa Cruz have been great opportunities to meet to wonderful people that enjoy hanging out with friends and playing music. Ordinary people music, not perfectly phrased or necessary sung sweetly. But sung for shear pleasure and to the best of our abilities. Over the last few weeks I met a young lady, named Jenna. She was the keeper of the ukulele player's tropical paradise, a wonderful place to play.

There's a very creative blog called "UKULELIA"

Here's a link. Take a listen to the song, "There was a Moon", that goes with the artwork.

http://ukulelia.com/2009/07/jacob-borshard.html

I think ukulelia is done by some Bay Area ukers, Gary & Craig, but I don't know who they are, yet.

Wheres UKE-O?

I was looking for Amanda on YT (previous post) to ask what she's done to her uke and came across a Disney movie trailer. Disney, has a strong-hold in Americana, and my heart, I guess. Took a peek at this movie that I'd never seen and voila! Even animation is getting in on the uke band.

On the same movie topic and way back in 1951, the glorious story of Gus Kahn (Danny Thomas)and his wife Grace LeBoy Kahn (Doris Day) came into theaters and now it's in DVD. Got it as a part of a Doris Day movie collection! Gus Kahn was a very popular music writer. The name of the movie is "I'll see you in my dreams". It has many old-time uke-popular and just plain old popular songs of that time that are now timeless: It had to be You, Yes Sir That's my Baby, Carolina in the Morning, Love me or leave me, Makin' Whoopee; No, no Nora; I'll see you in my dreams... There's also a ukulele scene in the movie.

AMANDA: What's on that UKULELE?

http://www.uketoob.com/ posted a video of this young lady playing. I noticed her ukulele and it looked like she stuck a playing card woven between the strings at the bridge like kids used to do with playing cards on their bicycle wheels. She also has a black stripe across her red ukulele which I think she wore off the paint using a pick. What do you think that was? The uke sounded so crisp and clear that she must've had a microphone real close.

Santa Cruz Favorite "Beer Run"

Here's a classic song for my oldest son, Jason...
(Jay Holliday has this song permanently embedded in his brain.)

B-double E double R U-N beer run
B-double E double R U-N beer run
all we need is a ten and five-er,
a car and key and a sober driver.
--
B-double E double R U-N beer run
A couple of frat guys from Abilene
drove out all night to see Robert Earl
Keenat the KPIG Swine and Sworea Dance.
--
They wore baseball caps and khaki pants.
They wanted cigarettes, so to save a little money
they bought one off this hippie that smelled kinda funny.
And next thing they knew they were both pretty hungry and pretty thirsty too
--
B-double E double R U-N beer run
B-double E double R U-N beer ru-unn
All we need is a ten and five-er, car and key and an able driver.
B-double E double R U-N beer run
--
They found a store with a sign that said
their beer was coldest.
So they sent in Brad 'cause he looked the oldest.
He got a case of beer and a candy bar,
walked over to where all the registers are
laid his fake I.D. on the counter top.
The clerk looked, and turned to look back up and stopped.
He said "Son, I ain't gonna call the cops,
but I'm gonna have to keep this card"
the guys both took it pretty hard.
--
B-double E double R U-N beer run
B-double E double R U-N beer ru-un
oh how happy we would be-had we only brought a better fake I.D.
B-double E double R U-N-beer run
--
They met another old hippie named Sleepy John,
claimed to be the one from the Robert Earl song.
So they gave him all their cash-he bought em some brews.
Was a beautiful day out in Santa Cruz
--
They were feelin' so good it shoulda been a crime.
The crowd was cool, and the band was prime.
They made it back up front to their seats just in time
to they could sing with all their friends
"the road goes on foreverand the party never ends".
--
B-double E double R U-N beer run
all we need is a ten and a five-er, car and key and a sober driver.
B-double E double R U-N beer run

Here's my DaSILVA CONCERT UKULELE #197

Mike DaSilva ukuleles are truly expertly crafted, light weight, and beautiful. The sound volume is quite loud. This ukulele is a concert model and it is a standard product, without costly rosettes and gingerbread, that Mike has recently produced in order to put high quality player ukuleles out in the mold of Martin Style "O" Ukuleles. These ukes come standard with fret dots on the side of the neck and slick 4:1 geared tuners in the standard "peg" style.
Humble indeed!

ALISTAIR WOOD BLUES UKULELE

Al is on TOP of everything ukululu on the internet. Sometimes I post a partial and plan to come back and expound on a video. Al, is another e-friend, someone I've never met but shared e-mails and enjoyed his labours (English for labor) and gifts to the community. And he was thanking me for the post within about an hour of it's posting. I know he spends quite a bit of time each day, searching, getting e-mails from all over the world, and providing top notch quality information out for us all to enjoy.

ALISTAIR THIS IS MY BIG THANK YOU!

I really like your JUMP BLUES on p.18 of the Blues Ukulele Book

----oO--<*>--Oo----

I hadn't seen this one of Al's Blues Ukulele videos before. I need to read more of his Blues Ukulele Book - It looks like a lot of fun. I have been thinking about my new friend, Judy Plicka, who it turns out, taught at my high school starting the year after I graduated. Judy, has been playing in bands for 37 years. She's got the skills and techniques to turn an average band into a good sounding band with her fingerpicking out melodies in a moments notice. Judy has a handicap that affects her right hand and she has adapted her finger picking to work around it. I woulda never known.

Judy has her father going in for heart surgery next Wednesday and has asked for the following:

RHAN WILSON: UKULELE UNIVERSITY CHANCELLOR & HEAD HONCHO

__v___ ROMP: The Evolution of Man Photo ___V__

Rhan, is a creator, a compassionate person, and a lover of making music. I have had the opportunity to meet him and work under his tutilege as a student in his Ukulele University. I should say that UU is not just for ukuleles. We had a drummer, guitarist, and bassist that made the experience similar to a garage band. The advantage we had though, was Rhan Wilson, the 8-eared-man, his sensibilities, and his creative weirdness. (It didn't hurt to have 2 students with over 30 years of playing experience: Judy P. on ukulele, resonator ukulele, and bass guitar AND Jay H. on Ukulele and Guitar.)
--
Our gathering of eight quickly bonded and encouraged each other to perform better. Rhan, constantly sharing insights, directed us on how to signal and communicate to each other. He challenged us to sing out. He challenged us to play our ukulele parts in different ways (vary our strums) We completed the 10 week course and have added a five week session to come after Rhan's two-week haitus in Oregon. We've even had three Tuesday Night Band (garage) meetings on our own with songs ranging from Hanalei Moon to Lynyrd Skynyrd's Freebird.
--
The following is cut and pasted from the Santa Cruz Sentinel (W. Baine 7/9/2009)
Direct link here...
--
Rhan Wilson does nothing ordinary. The creator of "An Altared Christmas," the live show and album that reframes common Christmas tunes in a minor key, has put together a new band, and there's nothing ho-hum about it.
--
ROMP, which plays next Wednesday at the Crepe Place in Santa Cruz, is an anagram of the first names of the four members of the band "" Wilson, Olaf Schiappacasse, Matt Bohn and Patti Maxine. All in the new band have played in Wilson's "Christmas" extravaganza; three of the four ROM have been part of the house band at the "Planet Cruz Comedy Hour."
--
The band is unusual not only for its instrumentation "" it will use everything from the baritone ukulele to the lap-steel guitar "" but for its off-beat treatment of beloved old songs. Chuck Berry's already bizarre "My Ding-a-Ling" performed in a minor key and sang in a Russian accent. The 1960s chestnut "Ode to Billie Joe," about the day "Billie Joe McAllister jumped off the Tallahatchie Bridge," is combined with the beat of the late Michael Jackson's "Billie Jean" to create the "Ode to Billie Jean."
--
"Proud Mary," "Harper Valley PTA," songs from Grace Jones and Gogol Bordello, all get thrown in the whirl and come out a bit different, said Wilson.
--
"We're not trying to make every song we do be odd or weird," he said. "We're just looking to have fun. I've been in a lot of bands, and all I want now is to play music and have some fun."

Ukulele Connoisseur Terry C. writes from Bali

--
Something fun about having shared interests in the internet age is that you can make friends all over the world. Terry C. and I met as adversaries on eBay where we were both collecting pictures of ukulele players. I used eBay's e-mail system and asked Terry if we could trade some pictures. I supposed we have communicated more or less regularly over about 2 years. Terry loves his Martin ukuleles and I have been privy to some private unwrapping videos for his 4 string treasures. You can see several of Terry C's excellent ukulele photos and videos at http://www.youtube.com/user/BeareTube
--
--
I just received a wonderful letter from him. He and his wife are Australian and did their summer trip to Bali. Here's a tidbit from his letter which discusses a bit about American society: unexplainable and great...
--
"Met lots of fellow travellers from all parts of the globe, including an American guy from LA who works as an 'Entertainment Lawyer' to the Hollywoodstars. He told us that Cheech & Chong are personal friends of his ... ... He also mentioned that no animals are allowed to be hurt or injured in any movies made in the US. This includes spiders, cockroaches and ants! He told us of a movie recently that required a victim to be covered with ants. Apparently, all the ants had to be counted before and after the shoot to make sure none were injured or killed. Imagine the litigation if an ant never made it back! They'd have to send out a searchparty. "He's a little guy, black and about three millimeters tall. Goes by the name of Harvey. You seen him?" Ain't America wonderful? The USA! Home of Martin ukuleles and the Ant Protection Society. I just love it! Actually, as a vegetarian I think this is a move in the right direction but I admit it's kinda bizarre. But thereya go."
--
Thanks Terry for sharing a little about your vacation with all of us. I love the photos of ukuleles in Balinesian paradise. I wish Wendy and I coulda been there with you and Julie. And we could be strummin' away. If you two ever want to come to the SF Bay Area I have room that you're welcome to. You'd feel right a home, it's my ukulele room!

K. Middleton / Uketoob / The Tuesday Band / My DaSilva Uke

Ken Middleton playing in France. I posted a "diagram" of some of Ken's Leonard Cohen strums a while back. I have been showing this to Sheila in our little Santa Cruz Tuesday night practice group. Uketoob found it first, he posts a video a day, subscribe and enjoy his stuff too. Beautiful filming Ken.

Last night, The Tuesday Band ,I'll call it that since we haven't named ourselves yet, in Santa Cruz got together sans Rhan Wilson our fearless director and guidance conselour whom in is Oregon. We have less than two handfuls of songs that we're working on but we are constantly getting better. I always feel like I'm the weak link but I think that's because I hear the thoughts in my head only. Perhaps nobody is truly satisfied with their own performance - we are a neurotic breed. BUT we all love to play! AND playing music with good people is a blast.

Robbie and Sheila are our female vocalists. Robbie has a powerful voice and yet she tells me sometimes she even feels a bit squeamish about singing in front of others. Last night I sang my two vocal parts. In my primo-number I have to be extremely determined to growl out the song, but the second song is sung quite softly in Brazilian Portuguese; Garota de Ipanema. Then Sheila and Robbie take over and sing The Girl from Ipanema in English.

I always thought that singing should be an effortless release of sound from the body. I now think that singing is hard work. Perhaps there is a muscle memory aspect with the vocal chords much like mucle memory in the chording fingers

I got an e-mail from Mike DaSilva earlier today. He said my ukulele might be ready when I come to the club meeting tonight.

INTERNATIONAL VINCENZA UKULELE

My, unwitting research assitant, and ukulele muse, Doug Chew always sends me a lot of musical information to digest. He's relatively new to the ukulele but he incorporates incredibly thorough internet sleuthing skills to find all sorts of videos, music recording equipment, and at the best prices.
--
Doug is so analytical about everything he does. He's constantly looking for songs to perform and creating a checklist of what he feels makes a good performance. He regularly revises and adds to his plan. I just listen and try to do as much as I can and sometimes I get quite embarrased with my lack of skill. So one can say that "I'm crazy" for doing the same thing and failing but I'd like to think there may be some incremental progress with each small failure.
--
He sent me this video and asked me to respond about which is my favorite performance. They are just a sampling of performers at the 2009 festival.

My favorite in this video was "Uke Box". I like the traditional music and the vintage clothing. I think their act was the strongest for the audience.

YELLOW BIRD / MILLS BROTHERS / CHET ATKINS

Here's a little tune, I been praticing...

Yellow bird, yellow bird, up high in banana tree. Yellow bird, you sit all alone like me.

--

Did your lady friend leave your nest again? That is very sad, makes me feel so bad.

You can fly away, in the sky away. You're more lucky than me.

--

I also had a pretty girl, she's not with me today.

They're all the same, the pretty girls, Take tenderness then they fly away.

--

Yellow bird up high in banana tree. Yellow bird, you sit all alone like me.

--

Let her fly away, in the sky away. Pick a town and soon, take from night to noon

Black and yellow, you, like banana too, They might pick you some day

--

Wish that I was a yellow bird, I'd fly away with you.

But I am not a yellow bird, So here I sit, nothin' else to do.

--

Yellow bird. Yellow bird. Ye-e-e-ello-o-ow bird.
