HOLD ON, THIS IS PRELIMINARY...
I wanted to create this blog as a place where I can store and retrieve information for future reference. I chose the name Humble Uker Ramblings because I have started out strumming my father's 1950's painted Harmony ukulele. I think that the greatest appeal of the ukulele as "the people's instrument" is it's humble simplicity. My contact email is HumbleUker@gmail.com. I have also been working on a blog for the Baritone Ukulele called Humble Baritonics.
So many different approaches to playing. Steven Sproat teaches thumb/index-finger picking in his Absolute Beginners books, & likely also in his new Ukelounge instructional DVD, which he says carries students through from beginning to advanced work, but I've never seen the style championed in such a convincing way as presented by Gordon Mark in this video. His choice of music only amplifies the pleasure.
ReplyDeleteOn-site is a video of Ken Middleton presenting thumb/3-finger picking for Leonary Cohen songs,& Richard Hefner teaches a thumb/2-finger style on the EZ Folk site. Rob MacKillop says on his uke fingerpicking sites that he generally uses thumb/2-finger.
Some players, Ohta-San among them (unless my eyes missed something on the videos I've watched), use the thumb only, & with such a seemingly simple style produce results that rip one's heart right out.
Ron, thanks for your comments. I like to use all of my fingers and thumb in variations. Lil' Rev is on my mind with his new album. He picks and strums and does so many variations in a folksy way. Then there's my buddy, Steven Strauss, who flattens out his index finger pad and softly strums upward. His music is soft, sweet, and unmistakably his very own.
