YT: LStrachey Songs, Site / IF I HAD YOU

Walt Disney & Cliff Edwards
I have been getting together with another Berkeley Ukulele Club member, Jane, to play and practice Steven Strauss arrangements for the most part. But other arrangements too. I had sent her some of Terry C's YT videos of Cliff Edwards. She latched on to the song, If I Had You. We played it and it is a very beautiful song. (see it at the bottom of this post) I decided to surf and look at the chords posted on the internet. Jane's got a good ear for chords. I came across Michael, a.k.a. LStrachey on You Tube. He's another Australian player. He claims not to be very good, judge for yourself as you listen to his playing. Lstrachey can be found on You Tube & Rollin Videos, here...

LStrachey - If I Had You

If I Had You Lyrics (1928)
by Ted Shapiro, Jimmy Campbell and Reg. Connelly.

[F]I could show the world how to [F7]smile
I could be [Bb]glad all of the [Bbm6]while
[F]I could change the [Am]grey skies to [C7]blue
If I had [F]you.

I could leave the old days behind,
Leave all my pals, I'd never mind
I could start my life all a-new
If I had you

I could climb the snow-capp'd mountain
Sail the mighty ocean wide
I could cross the burning desert
If I had you by my side

I could be a king, dear, uncrowned
Humble or poor, rich or renowned
There is nothing I couldn't do
If I had you.

ALISTAIR WOOD - How to Play Ukulele - Blues Uke

http://howtoplayukulele.com/

http://ukulelehunt.com/

Alistair must be the most prolific proponent of the ukulele in the world. I have been a junkie for ukulele information for the last 2-and-a-half-years. (This blog is my place to keep my findings for my future reference for sharing with local ukeclub members and other enthusiasts.) Al has shared so much with me and I am always impressed with his enthusiasm, knowledge and competency to create nicely published ukulele ebooks at really low prices.

His new book is How to Play Blues Ukulele. It is $15 until the end of October, and $17 thereafter. After paying for the book it is emailed to you and you can print it out immediately! It comes with (80) mp3’s and (4) backing tracks to play along with!

Al also says he has a SECRET project but since he’s posted it on the internet, somehow, the secret has slipped out…
.
“I've already been working away on my next ukulele project. This one is going to be a little different I've been putting together a collaboration with tabs and arrangements from a bunch of people. It's early days yet and I don't want to jinx it, but I'll throw caution to the wind and let you in on who else is involved so far: James Hill, Mark Kailana Nelson and Dominator. Best of all, the proceeds from it will be going to Ukuleles for Peace. And that's all I'm saying for now. Lips sealed.”

RED HOT JAZZ / Cliff Edwards

Cliff Edwards & Bessie Love

For those of you that can't get enough of listening to Cliff Edwards (Ukulele Ike) there is a website that has chronologically categorized his work. There are many recordings to listen to from old scratchy records. http://www.redhotjazz.com/cliffedwards.html
---
My good Australian efriend Terry C. has made several slide show presentations to go with CE great old time music, see his page at... http://www.youtube.com/user/BeareTube And if you have a ukulele that you know used to belong to CE Terry would love to have a picture of it. Terry collects pictures of CE for future pictorial compilations for songs. He particularly likes photos with CE holding a ukulele like the one above with Bessie Love.
---
Another local friend and music teacher, Alan Bond, has a site called the UkeCat Ukulele Method, http://home.comcast.net/~ukecat/catflat/bookcover.html, and he has some photos of CE in there too, http://home.comcast.net/~ukecat/catflat/ukepic6.html.

CLIFF EDWARDS / UKULELE IKE / YOU TUBE

Here's a sampling of the work of Cliff Edwards, also known as, Ukulele Ike. I like to review these old-time videos to see how effortlessly he played and sang. Cliff was a vaudeville performer and later in his career he performed in numerous movies. Cliff was the voice of Jiminy Cricket in Disney's Pinnocchio.

Tomas Kubinek / BUC Guest

Last night at the Berkeley Ukulele Club meeting Mike DaSilva introduced a special guest that had come to visit. His name is Tomas (Tomash) Kubinek and he made a ridiculous claim. He got up on stage and told us that he was going to put a glass of wine on his forehead and do a reverse summersault while playing a song on the ukulele... sounds ABSOLUTELY CRAZY! IMPOSSIBLE! He did it! And on part on the summersault he played the ukulele behind his back. Turns out he's a Worldwide traveling performance artist. Here's his website,
An interesting review from the Mobile Register, Alabama, "Suffice it to say that, between the unbelievably bad magic tricks, the chicken clucking, water-burbling, the hair standing on end, missing finger tricks, and absurd acrobatics, Kubinek deserves the title "Certified Lunatic". He also deserved the reaction from those members of the audience, who, had they not been so busy rolling around on the floor like mirthful marbles, would have applauded even louder and longer."

Tomas played a Fats Waller tune... You meet the nicest people

Jeff's Sidetrack (Tabs for the Violin)

Robert Plant & Allison Krause

***** THIS IS NOT INTENDED FOR UKULELE PLAYERS *****

When I was in 3rd grade I was taking violin lessons and going to John F. Kennedy elementary school in Newark, CA. My father took me on a visit so see relatives in Colorado. We saw my grandfather, Clinton Reed West, who was a painter and a lover of music. He played the violin and had an extra one that he gave to me. It was a Strativarius copy. I brought it over to Gryphon Strings recently and had a quick appraisal: made in Germany in the 1920's, low $.

I was thinking the other day, if there are tabs for the guitar, banjo, ulkulele, dulcimer then why not the violin / fiddle?

HAWAIIAN DREAMSTERS PHOTO

KEN MIDDLETON / UK / BLUEGRASS UKULELE

Ken Middleton has put some lessons and nicely prepared TAB song print outs for us ukulele players. I like his improvisations while sitting in his backyard garden. Ken has spent a lot of time putting this together. I thought that he’d be from Tennessee, but alas he's is from Newcastle under Lyme in the UK.

Ken, if you ever read this, thank you for all the work that you have put in for all of us out in the world to try. Also, my wife and I are Anglophiles and love watching UK mysteries and miniseries, such as Hamish MacBeth. Are you located anywhere near Midsomer?

He has a load of tutorials for guitar, and it appears the ukulele section is growing too. Here’s Ken’s YouTube Playlist Videos and TABs:

FOLK ALLEY / In Spite Of Ourselves

Lately, I have been listening a lot to the FOLK ALLEY station of http://www.live365.com/ radio. I heard this song “In Spite of Ourselves” and burst out in laughter. I thought about this one for the ukulele club… men singing one part and women the other. Not sure that this would go over too well.

JOHN & PRINE & IRIS CLEMENT (In Spite of Ourselves)(Requested by Billy Bob Thornton for a movie)

She don't like her eggs all runnyShe thinks crossin' her legs is funnyShe looks down her nose at moneyShe gets it on like the Easter BunnyShe's my baby I'm her honeyI'm never gonna let her goHe ain't got laid in a month of SundaysI caught him once and he was sniffin' my undiesHe ain't too sharp but he gets things doneDrinks his beer like it's oxygenHe's my babyAnd I'm his honeyNever gonna let him goIn spite of ourselvesWe'll end up a'sittin' on a rainbowAgainst all oddsHoney, we're the big door prizeWe're gonna spite our nosesRight off of our facesThere won't be nothin' but big old heartsDancin' in our eyes. She thinks all my jokes are cornyConvict movies make her hornyShe likes ketchup on her scrambled eggsSwears like a sailor when shaves her legsShe takes a lickin'And keeps on tickin'I'm never gonna let her go.He's got more balls than a big brass monkeyHe's a wacked out werido and a lovebug junkieSly as a fox and crazy as a loonPayday comes and he's howlin' at the moonHe's my baby I don't mean maybeNever gonna let him goIn spite of ourselvesWe'll end up a'sittin' on a rainbowAgainst all oddsHoney, we're the big door prizeWe're gonna spite our nosesRight off of our facesThere won't be nothin' but big old heartsDancin' in our eyes. There won't be nothin' but big old heartsDancin' in our eyes.(spoken) In spite of ourselves CHORDS http://www.cowboylyrics.com/tabs/prine-john/in-spite-of-ourselves-2715.html

MELISSA / BUC Visitor September '08

I met Melissa from San Antonio, Texas at our last Berkeley Ukulele Club meeting in September ‘08. She told me that she’s been playing the ukulele for about 2 months and that her dad also plays. I took a picture of her with our host and ukulele artisan Mike DaSilva so she could show her dad back on the East coast.

Melissa has posted a few songs on YouTube under the name “onoftheminterns”. She said she liked her Cecilia the best so I’m putting it here. I also liked her Jimmy Buffet Come Monday. You're doing great - keep it up. HU

UKULELE SONGS (New Website)

This photo is of two ukulele players I met while trying to play with the Royal Hawaiian Ukulele Band in Berkeley, California. They both were always helpful and encouraging to new players. I have had this photo hiding as pixels on my computer for some time and thought this would be a good post for it because I just came across a new website of ukulele song arrangements. It looks like Chordie and Ukulele Boogaloo have combined on this site but I am not sure if they have.
The site pages look like http://www.chordie.com/ but the songs are in Ukulele Boogaloo format,

The selection is at about 250 songs now. I look forward to it adding much more in the future.
