Brasil || Manha de Carnaval

With UKULELE!
.
This video came to me at a perfect moment. Yesterday I was listening to my Barizilian Portuguese language course from Pimsleur Language Courses. My sister-in-law Luciana Lindroos is from Brasil and I think that Bossa Nova music is perhaps the MOST serene and beautiful music in the world. Well it's close anyway.

This band has such a perfect blend of voices: Human male and female, Guitar, Bass, Ukulele, Hand Drums. They share the stage so sweetly and gracefully.

Brazilian Water Conservation Campaign

Kevin C., whom I met about 5 years ago at my first Northern California Ukulele Festival in Hayward, California and then remet many times at the Berkeley Ukulele Club at Mike DaSilva's ukulele workshop and studio, sent me the following video link on YouTube. I had heard the story on the radio just recently, perhaps on the educational Public Radio International.
--
The campaign is to teach children water conservency in a rather unique fashion. In America, we have a more puritanical view when it comes to showing body parts or bodily functions. But in Europe and, by the looks of this, Brazilian's tend to take things a bit more naturally. I think I hear an 'ukulele in there too.

Kevin has been on a bit of a hiatus lately, he's hiding somewhere up in Fairfield, taking care of his family and his work. I never really got the "down low" on your tricking bluesy stuff that you would always dazzle us with at the back of the club. And Kevin, thanks for letting me know your finding some entertaiment here on the blog and thanks for sharing a bit of Brazil. HU

Vintage Band Photo, Warmup?

In my striving inch-by-inch in the direction of minimalism. I spent $3.50 at the Ohlone College Fleamarket today. Not bad for a 1-1/2 inch thick travel guide to Brazil and one old band photo that looks like it's from the 40's or early 50's. Do any of you know when these serrated edge photos stopped being in vogue? Original Photo is 4-1/2" wide x 3" tall. Click on the picture to get a larger view. Look at the artwork on the guitar to the right.
