Leo Kottke

.
Today I am listening to the Leo Kottke Special 22 Track Collection. I find his music amazingly deep and he plays fingerstyle guitar. I enjoy listening to all genres of music but some I allow much less time to. Folk music has attracted more attention because the songs are probing, the voices don't always fall into commercial markets, and they often have simple country wisdom.
.
Kottke had a song called Rings that I was looking for but could not find on the standby Chordie. I looked thru several songs on Chordie which appeared to researched out by someone. Seems that college music students are honing their ears by transcribing tablature of various musicians. It appears that Kottke played a banjo for a period of time...
.
"Most of the technical inroads that I made (for playing guitar) came from trying to learn how to play the banjo. I couldn’t play it, but in trying I realized that there were some things that I overlooked in the guitar... Leo Kottke (Aug 77 Guitar Playermagazine)."
.
By trying to learn the Earl Scruggs technique, it got me out of a rut that I had dug for myself with the (right handpicking) pattern I had learned... At one time I was playing a tune I called “The Turtle Hills” and it dawned on me one day that it was “Cripple Creek”... Leo Kottke (Apr 82 Guitar Player).

.
Here's another place to find Leo Kottke's guitar tabs. (I sometimes look thru guitar tabs to see if they're translatable to ukulele with minimal effort.)

Here are some other favorite folk artists that I repeatedly listen to...

  3. Jeff, try fingerpickers such as Stefan Grossman,
John Renbourn, Bert Jansch, Duck Baker. Just a few for a start, but they cover a wide range of music and you might enjoy them.
